Tips for planters

Make it stand out

My client was tired of looking out her window and seeing this block wall belonging to the neighbor.

The tall tree is a Sweet Bay Laurel, Middle is a Camellia, and the white planter is a Blue Star fern with purple sweet potato vine.

Looking to hide an undesirable view or create a seasonal spot of color? Planters are a quick and easy way to beautify your space. Wondering where to start with so many options?

There are some simple rules to follow:

  • Odd numbers are pleasing to the eye

  • Thriller, Filler, Spiller

  • You want the Thriller or tall plant to go in the middle of the pot or the back

  • Fillers are a nice middle height, think fluffy or spreading.

  • Spillers trail over the edge of the pot and soften the edges.

  • If you have 3 small pots plant one of each in them. Back one thriller, middle filler, front spiller.

Always match your plants to the sun conditions for success. If your pots are getting full sun the easiest options may be succulents. When shopping at the nursery look at where the shade cloth is, typically the shade plants will be under a shade cloth, whereas the full sun ones will be out in the sun!

Here are some examples I’ve made below. When in doubt, hire a professional, I love combining beautiful plants!
